Another Place, Another Time – CK004

Product ID: CK004
The Banff area has a long history of First Nation’s occupation who were obviously just as enamored with the aesthetics of the area. It appears that the mountains served as an area for spiritual journeys and vision seeking, as well. If you look hard enough remnants of that time adorn river walls and cliffs. As I came across this little bend in the Forty Mile Creek for the first time, I sat for a while and wondered what incredible stories could be told...if rivers could talk.

A source of food and clothing for my family. In the Fall, my Mom would spend a week tanning the hide and many more weeks making winter boots for us. Some of the meat was dried...a form of jerky...and what we couldn't eat right away was shared with neighbours.

The painting, "Journey of RavenSong" is Bill's expression of the spiritual journey that the carving of the canoe was for him. On the left going to the right are the spirits of Bill's paternal grandparents, his maternal grandparents, and two elders - all of whom had a great influence on Bill's life. "Raven Song" is surrounded by the characters of the sea - for the canoe and the sea are a significant part of Tsimshian life.

Kwa-Gulth Killer Whale – JH004

Product Code: JH004
The Killer Whale is the most respected and most often depicted sea creature in Kwa-Gulth culture. When I do a design I like to use whatever space I have available. It made me think that by seeing only half the design it gave the appearance of being bigger and whoever was looking at it would have to use their imagination to see the rest of it.

A History On the Edge – CK007

Product Code: CK007
Even though centuries have passed you can still see remnants of aboriginal occupation in the Rockies, in the form of petroglyphs, preserved on cliff walls and rocks. The drawings could have been the result of a vision quest, perhaps, in a time before it was evident that they were a part of a history on the edge.

The Perfect Night – CK006

Product Code: CK006
I painted this picture after several trips to Banff and experiencing, first hand, many perfect nights sitting around a campfire. This particular location is near Saskatchewan Crossing between Jasper and Lake Louise, Alberta, Canada. After having lived in Banff now for several years there are times when we are closer to wolves and other large animals than one is comfortable with, but nothing compares with the howl of a wolf in the middle of a perfect night.

Bearing Gifts We Traversed A Far! - NK003

The Christian stories of my childhood were replete with camels and kings with crowns and brightly coloured robes. If the star shining in the East had appeared to the Ojibwa it would have been the elders, both men and women who would have journeyed bearing gifts to Manitou. The Great Mystery.

Early Morning Drink – CK005

Product Code: CK005
Occasionally, one can be in the midst of a convergence of circumstances that generate a memory for life. What you see before you is my recollection of one such instance. On an early foggy morning, as my father and I made our way to one of his work assignments we crept along a road that led us by a small lake and in the distance the sun emerged out of a peaceful dense mist. My child’s imagination saw more, as I imagined a horse and warrior in the midst of an early morning drink.

This picture represents imaginary images of the Great Spirit, the Creator. Man has carved petroglyphs and tried to paint pictures to portray him/her, but for me the light within and beyond is Gitchi Manitou, the Great Spirit, the Creator, God.

A shaman sings to the Creator celebrating the good things his people have received. It is a time to give thanks for all those things that have made life good - like the connections we have with the animals and what these animals have meant and still mean to the First Nations people.

Misty Morning - AKR005

The snow has already begun to melt on a misty morning in early spring. A swift fox makes his way through the trees, rocks and stumps that are slowly appearing from beneath a thick blanket of snow. He stops for a moment and looks around, something has caught his attention, possibly the sound of a rabbit hopping in the snow.

The Old Ones told me that when it is time for me to go on the hunt, I must fast for four days and four nights.

I must give of myself to see what spirit I will carry on my first hunt. They also told me that on the fifth morning efore the sun comes up, I must offer my finest arrow to the Sky Beings for guidance. I am grateful to the Old Ones.

I am grateful to the Sky Medicine.

Pony boy is a two-dimensional acrylic assemblage on canvas. The materials that were used for this assemblage are rabbit fur, plaster casts, feathers, and beads. The inspiration for this assemblage is the artist’s son and represents his identity. Every aspect of this assemblage symbolizes a characteristic trait. The rabbit fur for speed and youth. The horse for skill. The feather and colour blue for freedom. The hand print for discovery.

Santa's Visit To Tuk - LAP003

In Tuktoyaktuk my mom said that it was a tradition for families to go out door to door and shake hands with the rest of the community wishing them a Merry Christmas. As a child I remember looking for Santa on Christmas Eve in the sky. So this is just a fun painting depicting Santa flying over Tuk.
