The Raven is known as the trickster and tends to be witty and have a great sense of humor. There is a story of the Raven stealing the light which is how we got the sun. That story is depicted here as the Raven with the Sun in his beak. I felt that for one of my first designs it would fitting do depict the creator.

The Perfect Night – CK006

Product Code: CK006
I painted this picture after several trips to Banff and experiencing, first hand, many perfect nights sitting around a campfire. This particular location is near Saskatchewan Crossing between Jasper and Lake Louise, Alberta, Canada. After having lived in Banff now for several years there are times when we are closer to wolves and other large animals than one is comfortable with, but nothing compares with the howl of a wolf in the middle of a perfect night.

Kwa-Gulth Bear – JH001

Product Code: JH001
The Bear is looked at to be very wise in the Kwa-Gulth culture. It is said when the Bear hibernates he dreams great dreams and learns many things. When he wakes up after his long sleep he has learned a great deal so is wise beyond his years. I tend to do Bear designs and masks on a regular basis. There are quite a few ways to depict him while still keeping the spirit of the piece.

The Banff area has a long history of First Nation’s occupation who were obviously just as enamored with the aesthetics of the area. It appears that the mountains served as an area for spiritual journeys and vision seeking, as well. If you look hard enough remnants of that time adorn river walls and cliffs. As I came across this little bend in the Forty Mile Creek for the first time, I sat for a while and wondered what incredible stories could be told...if rivers could talk.

The Killer Whale is the most respected and most often depicted sea creature in Kwa-Gulth culture. When I do a design I like to use whatever space I have available. Even though centuries have passed you can still see remnants of aboriginal occupation in the Rockies, in the form of petroglyphs, preserved on cliff walls and rocks. The drawings could have been the result of a vision quest, perhaps, in a time before it was evident that they were a part of a history on the edge.
