This is my most favorite painting to date. It was quite a challenge to get to the top of Twin Falls which inspired the work and it was a pleasure to sit and compose the image you see before you. It was one of my first experimentations, in combination, with another of my passions...the Aurora Borealis. Many stories are told in my culture about the Northern Lights.

Magi, camels and desert are the usual images that spring to mind at Christmas when the airwaves are full of traditional carols, but there are other points of view aren't there? This is a distinctly Canadian version of this popular Christmas carol. Polar bears are very much the kings of the north and they are about to visit and pay homage to the new life born under the star.

Rides With You On Your Journey – DA005

PRODUCT ID: DA005
Sitting in a cabin by the lake many years ago, my uncle Deny picked up his drum and said to me, I want to pass you a song.

This song talks about “I ride a white horse; I throw my hands in the air and I rejoice.” I pass you this horse song because it helped me many years ago in my hard times. Whenever I felt like I could no longer continue, I would sing this song and I would see this white horse running through the sweat lodge. He is a powerful spirit, and I ask this powerful spirit to ride with you on your journey. Then he sang the song in that cabin by the lake.

This painting represents a family heading home from visiting family and friends. My Mother growing up in Tuktoyaktuk said her and her many sibling each received one gift, it was always a piece of clothing. Anything from a new pair of Mukluks her mother had been working on for months, or a beautiful new parka cover or pair of Mitts.

The strength and "Spirit of the Rotary" is expressed here with "Eaglemoon" at the centre of the Raven's outer circle of life; unifying to serve the community, governing for the needs of the people with love and authority. The raven was the first symbol and crest of the Northwest Coastal Indians. He is the creator's assistant. The mythical bird is a symbol of prestige - a cultural hero. In Tsimshian culture the eagle plays a leadership role. They are highly respected by all who share their environment. Eagles are loyal and are great providers for their young.

Long before the coming of the white man, the first peoples of this land traded with one another. The peoples of the prairies traded with the peoples of the swamp lands for medicines, just as they traded with the peoples of the big water (west coast) for fish. There always existed a trade route. In this case, the warrior had crossed over the mountains to the big water loaded with his cargo of buffalo pemmican to trade for dried salmon. In each trade journey, there was also the prize of the trade, which was to the plains people the brightly coloured shells worn as ceremonial earrings and necklaces -- a practice that exists to this day.
